Smoke and Carbon Monoxide

Where to install alarms?

Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detector Placement

We all know that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms save lives and are a critical safety feature in our homes. Use this guide to be sure the placement of these devices allows them to work as intended, and that your home is in compliance with state codes.

where are smoke detectors required?

Smoke alarms must be installed in the following locations:
  • Each Sleeping Room: Inside every bedroom or room used for sleeping.
  • Outside Sleeping Areas: In the immediate vicinity outside of bedrooms (typically a hallway).
  • Every Level: On every story of the home, including habitable attics and basements.
  • Stairwells: At the top and bottom landings of all interior staircases.

CO alarms are required in all homes with fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces, or attached garages.

  • Outside Sleeping Areas: In the immediate vicinity of all bedrooms.
  • Every Level: On every occupiable level of the dwelling, including basements.
  • Specific Bedrooms: Inside any bedroom (or its attached bathroom) that contains a fuel-burning appliance.
  • Mounting Requirements: Placement should follow the manufacturer’s instructions. While CO is slightly lighter than air, many models are plug-in (low) or ceiling-mounted (high).
